Fly Selection for the Ogmore & Ewenny Rivers
Hare's ear

HOOK: size 12
THREAD: Brown
RIB: Gold wire
TAIL: Pheasant  tail.
ABDOMEN: Hare's ear
THORAX: Hare's ear
WING:ADDITIONS. Some hares ears sport Flashabou or epoxy wing pads and bead heads.

The Hare's ear is a general nymph pattern. It would be hard to find a nymph box anywhere in the world that didn't have some version of the hares ear. The original pattern is tied almost entirely from the naturally mottled and spikey hair found on the face and between the ears of the European hare.

1.  Wrap the shank with light lead wire from the bend towards the eye, leaving enough of a gap by the eye to tie off.

2.  Tie in a few fibre of hare's body fur to form the tail. Tie in gold ribbing and dub hare's ear fur on to the thread

3.  Wind the dubbed thread up the shank and follow up with gold ribbing. (It is not necessary to use hackle pliers.)

4.  Form a head with the tread and tie off. Pick out fur to make the fly shaggier.
