 Fishing  Etiquette

Fishing can and should be a fairly relaxing sport. In the interest of all, and to ensure that we each enjoy our day / night, we must apply some consideration towards other anglers. The first and in my opinion the most important part of fishing Etiquette is "If it would upset you and possibly spoil your enjoyment then don't do it to others." The second most important part of Etiquette is "If in doubt, ASK." If you are a newcomer or novice you may be wondering what things can upset an angler or spoil a good days fishing.

Always obey the law

Adhere to the fishery rules and any local regulations. If you are not sure of any rule, ask a member of the fishery. Keep noise to a minimum. Don't shout across to your mate on the other bank. If you must carry a mobile phone either keep it turned off or put it on vibrate. When choosing a fishing spot always look upstream and down for other anglers, keep at least 30 yards / metres away on the larger pools / runs, or wait until they have pasted you. Don't claim a productive fishing area by leaving either your tackle bag on the banks or by planting your net in the mud. Catch a few fish and then let another angler have some sport. Fish can sense vibration so try to keep any vibration down to a minimum. If despatching a fish, hold it in the net and take it out of the water and up on the bank away from the waters edge. Try not to leave fish lying on the bank. Put them away or keep them in a bass bag. When moving along a bank let any other anglers on your path know that you will be passing behind them. This usually gives you an excuse to have a chat. If you see another angler struggling with a large fish. Ask if he/she can manage to net it themselves. If you do offer to net a fish and you make a hash of it and loose the fish. You will be held to blame for a long time. Don't be to eager to offer advice. Many anglers are happy to learn from their mistakes. If you think advice may benefit another angler then try to enter in to a general conversation. If he or she needs advice they will probably drop some sort of hint during conversation.

General Country Code

When finished with a cast or leader. Gather it up and chop it in to little pieces and dispose of it either in a bin or better still take it home and dispose of it there.
Never leave litter lying around at the waters edge. Its unsightly and can give anglers a bad image.
Always leave gates as they are found. If in doubt, close them.
Do not frighten any livestock that may be in your general fishing area.
Never light fires.
And finally, treat other anglers and water users as you would like to be treated yourself
