  A Quick look at Spinners

Which spinner to choose ?

Black flying cSpinners are lures consisting of a blade which spins or undulates and takes the fish. The spoon bait consists of a blade which vibrates at various frequencies and amplitudes. Flying "C" or condom, super spinner, various colours and sizes, black with silver blade is very popular, my personal favourite being red. There are simply hundreds of various types of spinners to choose from, above are only two that I prefer.

Many think that in clear water a copper coloured blade is needed and in murky water where there is less light a silver coloured one is better. This reasoning seems logical but it is that of a man and not a fish ! If we try to put ourselves in the skin of a salmon or sea trout, which is not an easy thing to do, the picture is a completely different one. For example when a fish is in shallow water a bait fish would appear to be light coloured. On the other hand in the hollows or near the bottom it would be dark. Depending on the light we can see that a silver coloured lure is preferable when the weather is fine
whereas when the weather is overcast a dark lure is better. The decoration improves the visual aspect of the lure Meppsbut there again the fish doesn't see your spinner as you see it in the box. In the water with the rotating movement the dots become stripes. In water disturbed by rain the fluorescence of some paints covering the blade do not work as the light cannot penetrate the water sufficiently. Some say that the decoration is aimed at catching the fisherman rather than the fish. That may be true but the most important thing surely is to think : my lure is excellent, I'm sure to catch some fish.

Who invented the first spinner ?

No one knows. The spinning spoon has been in the catalogues since 1920. In France André Molnard produced the first spinner. The patent is still used by Mepps (Manufacture d'Engins de Précision pour la Pêche Sportive). At that time spinners were developed slowly, today vibrations are measured and they are designed by computer.

There are simply hundreds of various spinners to choose from, the pictured are only some I prefer.

Vibrax spinnersVibrax spinners have an inbuilt resonator gear preventing line twist. Its rotor transmits provocative sounds alluring fish. Various sizes are available

Size
The size of the lures must correspond to the prey available at the time. The fish adapts to food it finds easily. In autumn predators consume large quantities of abundant fry (4 to 5 cm) consequently the small spinners are better.  Consequently when prey is scarce a larger model will be more efficient. At this time there is less vegetation and it is easier to see the prey. Then you must work the spoon according to the depth, the desired fish, the model, the season and the weather etc.
Of course, the best spinner is the one which catches the fish.
