April 23rd 2003, saw the beginning of the
largest private river clean up operation undertaken by the
Ogmore Anglers. Over recent years much of the lower Ogmore
in the area known locally as the scouts pool, below the
ancient village of Merthyr Mawr has been a complete visible
blight on the landscape. Over twenty fallen trees
have blocked the river, forming an almost natural net, collecting
all sorts of rubbish and debris brought down stream, during
the winter floods. The problem escalated to such an extent,
that unnatural erosion of the river banks began altering
the whole course of the river. Therefore with the help of
private contractors the trees, debris and rubbish has been
safely removed. The works lasted seven days, which finally
saw completion after a number of deciated Ogmore anglers
cleaned the remaining banks and laid grass seed to the disturbed
areas. Over 50 willow sappling have also been planted, to
reinforce the existing river bank. Much of this area has
been unfishable to Ogmore anglers for many years however
with the works now complete, it has immediately opened up
many lost pools and runs for the return of some excellent
fishing once again.
