Ian Mackinnon an Ogmore Club member for the
past 2 seasons, has just returned home to London, with a
life's time ambition complete.
We all know how difficult it is to catch sea
trout, however Ian set him self a challenge that most of
us can only dream, landing a double figure Welsh sewin.
A dedicated fly fisherman for over 40yrs, Ian has fished
all over the world, in pursuit of specimen fish. The 1980's
he turned his attention to mainly still water staking where
he managed to break most of his local still water records,
landing Brown Trout over 12lb & Rainbows over 13lb.
However, his greatest pleasure and achievement to date has
been a truly wide Welsh Sewin weighing in at 11lb 10oz,
from the River Ewenny on 5th of August 2004.
Ian has been fishing for Sea trout for 5 years,
four of those seasons on the Rivers Ogmore & Ewenny.
His last trip consisted of four nights fishing the Ewenny
River, much favored as it suits his style of fishing. Ian
loves to spot and stalk fish during daylight hours, at night
he chooses pools very carefully, many of which look impossible
to fish even by day, but some how he manages to cast his
fly just in the right spot.
In four nights on the Ewenny, Ian landed fish
weighing 1lb 13oz, 3lb 5oz. , 4lb 14oz, with the largest
being 11lb 10oz.

All fish were taken on a Donald Downs Seatrout
Lure (see below for tying instructions) with a trusty
25yrs old, 10ft 4/6 rated fibretube rod, floating double
taper line and 10lb nylon leader.
