I recently had an interesting
email from Glen Ellis, regarding the river Camel in North
Cornwall.
On December 10th Glen managed
to land a beautiful 9lb salmon from the Island pool, River
Camel. Chrome bright, sea fresh with huge sea lice on
it, taken on a 30 gram flying C, there were many more
good fish present, but clear heavy water and bright sunshine
unfortunately made the fishing hard going.
The week before a 17lb
Salmon was taken on spinner.
Glen also went on to explain
how the local clubs in the area are now stripping fish
for a hatchery project they recently set up. Anglers donating
rod caught fish to this project, can call a number of
their fellow members, whom have agreed to be on call to
help. Once called they arrange to collect the fish immediately
with water tanks on trailers attached to their cars.
They are also trying circle
hooks for worming to avoid gut hook fish, the idea of
circle hooks are supposed to improve jaw hook ups. But
sadly a high percentage of fish are still swallowing these
hooks and are indeed dieing. Glen and I are wondering
if there are any anglers out there that have or use these
hooks with success? if you have information relating to
this subject please let us know, email rob@ogmoreriver.com
Also the question must
be asked, how many Salmon (red fish etc) survive after
being returned by worm anglers. The anglers on the Camel
have lost 14out of 16 of the worm caught fish in the hatchery.
Well there we go just
a little bit of news until the season starts
