This
picture illustrated guide to fishing flies dedicated
to the Sewin (Sea trout) began as a personal index
and reference. It includes many traditional, and
'imported' flies which are known to be successful.
However my main objective has been to simplify [where
possible] many of the patterns for ease of tying,
speed and a reduction in the overall use of the
more unusual materials.
How
many times have you sat down with pattern book,
loved a fly but unfortunately don't have the correct
materials. Well all that's about to change.....
I
enjoy tying my own flies but enjoy fishing
much more and would rather be out on the river bank
than sitting at any vice. Nevertheless, I would
rather create my own flies from my assortment of
hooks, fur, feathers and synthetic materials, than
buy from any store.
I
am not a particularly fast or proficient
at tying flies. When I sit down at the vice, I do
not want to labour over a fly that requires many
different materials and tying steps. While complicated
flies are really nice to look at, and require skill
to tie precisely, do fish really care. Relatively
simple, impressionistic flies will catch lots of
fish if presented properly. My favourite flies are
always simple to tie, usually with only 2 or 3 different
materials.
The
fact of the matter is to experiment, with what you
have, don't be afraid to alter the pattern, change
the materials, that's what fly tying is all about,
work on your own patterns, who's to say that your
own creations are not better than anyone else's.
Best of
luck, Rob [a simple angler with a simple mind] |
