Fly Tying Basics   Starting Off Tails/Bodies/Ribs Hackles Wings/Heads

The pleasures of fly fishing are greatly enhanced when you use flies that you tie yourself.

Starting Off & Whip Finishing

There is obviously little point in beginning to tie a fly if you do not know how to start off the tying thread and secure any material to the hook.
Starting Off
1 Fix the hook securely in a vice and loop the thread beneath the hook. 2 Hold the loose end of the thread tight and wind the bobbin end over it. Wind until the tread is trapped.

Whip Finishing by Hand
1. When the fly is complete, form a figure-4-shaped loop. 2. Flip fingers around, bringing them beneath the hook.
3. Repeat process four or five times, ensuring that the loop is wound neatly over the loose end lying back along the hook. 4. Now, slip the thread off the fingers, draw the loop tight and insert a dubbing needle into the loop to retain tension.

Using a Whip Finish Tool
1. Loop the tying thread around the two prongs of the tool. Then bring the thread back to form a figure-4-shape 2. Rotate the tool so that it falls beneath the hook, trapping the loose end.
3. Repeat four or five times, then slip the thread off the lower prong. 4. Retaining tension by allowing the upper hook to catch the thread, steadily pull the loose thread to tighten the loop.
